Cygnus cargo freighter released from International Space Station

Cygnus cargo craft built by Northrup Grumman, global aerospace and defense technology company has departed from the International Space Station after delivering several tons of supplies and scientific experiments. NASA's Station commander Christopher Cassidy monitored Cygnus' systems as it moved away from the orbiting laboratory.

Washington: An unpiloted Cygnus cargo craft that delivered several tons of supplies and scientific experiments to the International Space Station (ISS) departed from it on Monday.

The cargo craft was built by Northrup Grumman, global aerospace and defense technology company.

Dubbed the "SS Robert H. Lawrence," Cygnus arrived at the station February 18, three days after its launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia.

Flight controllers on the ground sent commands to robotically detach Cygnus from the Earth-facing port of the Unity module, maneuver it into place, and release it from the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

NASA's Station commander Christopher Cassidy monitored Cygnus' systems as it moved away from the orbiting laboratory.

According to NASA, Cygnus will help with fire detection and it will also deploy a series of payloads.
