Rio de Janeiro: Students and teachers in large numbers hit the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Thursday protesting against the government's decision to cut education budget.

The march was part of demonstrations in cities across Brazil against the 30% cuts to the discretionary budget at all federal universities.

Academics, professors and students said the move by far-right President Jair Bolsonaro will affect education system at all levels including research funding and scholarships.

Federal University of Rio de Janeiro student Marceli Nascimento de Lima said the future of universities was "under threat".

Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro student Fernanda Grilo said scholarships were needed to help cover the cost of studying and without them research could suffer.

Meanwhile in a video, Brazil's Education Minister Abraham Weintraub said the government has received complaints that some professors had pressured students to participate in demonstrations.
