Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): Amid nationwide lockdown, a few migrant workers have been compelled to spend days in sewage pipes lying on the ground, next to the under-construction site in Lucknow, a source said.
Reportedly, there were hundreds of labourers engaged in the construction of several projects in Lucknow who were unable to return back to their homes after the lockdown order came in force.
According to the sources, the daily wage earners in Lucknow are facing the acute shortage of food items. Even though most of them have built a makeshift hut, their problem regarding food and shelter remains unaddressed.
"We are living in sewage pipes lying on the ground near the Kukrail drain. Most of us belong to Madhya Pradesh, we had come here to earn our livelihood but due to the lockdown, we have been facing an immense struggle. We don't even get food to eat, further, it has been two months of our distress. It's disheartening to say that none of the government officials came to our rescue," one of the migrant labourers said.
While talking to ETV Bharat, a daily worker exclaimed: "Our contractor stays away from all this matter and we are living at the mercy of some passerby who occasionally gives us something to eat".
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday crossed over 1,500 coronavirus cases with 21 fatalities recorded so far.
