New Delhi: After the Rinku Sharma murder case in Delhi which triggered intense debates in the press and social media, another young girl's murder in the Begampur area has rocked the national capital. The 17-year-old girl was allegedly bludgeoned to death with a hammer on Friday evening at her home — an act, which according to the Delhi police, stemmed from 'rejection of marriage proposal'.
The accused identified as Laik is at large and police have launched a manhunt to nab him. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has increased security near the victim's residence.
The police say the deceased earlier used to live with her family in the Bawana area. The family moved to the Begumpur area around one year ago.
"The 25-year-old Laik, who was their neighbour earlier, used to visit them often at their new home. He was on good terms with the girl’s family until recently when he started developing feelings for the teenager. Recently, he proposed to the girl, but she had turned him down," said Pramod Kumar Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
"Prima facie the reason behind the crime appears to be the victim's refusal to marry the accused. The kin (of the victim) said the incident took place on Friday and police received information about it around 9.30 pm from the hospital. The victim's brother registered a complaint with Begumpur police. The brother in his complaint said he saw Laik locking their house and rushing out. He said he broke open the door and found her (the victim) lying in a pool of blood with a head injury," the DCP said.
"The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. She had sustained a head injury caused by a hammer," the officer said.
"During the investigation, the deceased's brother said he suspected that Laik might have proposed to her for marriage when no one was around. When she refused, he may have attacked her with a hammer and fled from the spot," DCP Mishra said.
Mishra said the accused works in a factory and lives with his uncle in the Bawana.
Police have formed multiple teams to arrest the accused.
