Varanasi: When Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India he started planning on strengthening the digital sector of the country.
As part of this planning, digital payments and banking services were promoted in remote areas.
In Varanasi, Modi adopted a village named Jayapur under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (MP's Model Village Scheme) on 7 November 2014.
After that work for promoting digital payments in the village began and POS machines were distributed among small vendors and shopkeepers.
But today the ground reality is different and Jayapur is still to achieve the vision of 'Digital India'.
When ETV Bharat reporter reached the village, the distributed POS machines were missing as the bank took the machines back two years ago, due to their inconsistent use.
When the bank was collecting back the machines, an amount of Rs 669 was debited from the accounts of the shopkeepers.
They were told that after few days the amount will be credited back but the amount never came back.
On seeing these conditions, Modi's adopted village Jayapur seems to have failed in achieving the status of ‘adarsh’ village.
