New Delhi: The Supreme Court will on Monday hear a petition filed by producers of biopic 'PM Narendra Modi' against the ban imposed by the Election Commission.

The court on Friday agreed to hear the matter, after the producers submitted the plea raising issues related to fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression.

The filmmakers petition came after the apex court on Thursday in a judgement had come down heavily on the West Bengal government for imposing a shadow ban on a Bangla film "Bhobishyoter Bhoot" based on political satire and imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the state government.

Earlier, on April 10, the Election Commission asked the authorities to stop the screening of the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during poll period, saying any such film that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in the electronic media.

The EC order came a day before the movie was to be released.

The first phase of Lok Sabha elections started on Thursday.

The Supreme Court previously dismissed a petition filed by a Congress activist seeking stay on the release of the biopic and said that the Election Commission would be an "appropriate" place to seek the redressal.
