EVM issue back in SC: Litigation filed to cancel LS Polls

A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a fresh round of Lok Sabha elections by using only ballot papers. Meanwhile, the petition will be heard on Friday by the vacation bench of the Supreme Court.

New Delhi: The EVM issue is back in the apex court as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) by Manohar Lal Sharma on Thursday seeking fresh Lok Sabha polls using ballot papers.

EVM ISSUE BACK IN SC

ML Sharma, in his petition, said that the Election Commission (EC) does not have the power to hold elections by using EVMs. He further claimed that as per the Representation of People's Act, an election can be held only using ballot papers.

Meanwhile, the petition will be heard on Friday by the vacation bench of the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing.

Body:Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is once again back in the apex court seeking cancellation of the Lok Sabha elections which concluded last month.

ML Sharma in his petition has said that Election Commission did not have power to hold election using EVM. Further he has claimed that as per the Representation of People's Act an election can be held only using ballot papers.


Conclusion:The petition will be heard tomorrow by the vacation bench of the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing.
