New Delhi: Hours after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's son Asad was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi, a month-old statement of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath about wiping out mafias from the state started trending on social media.
While addressing the budget session of Uttar Pradesh assembly on February 26, CM Yogi had accused the Samajwadi Party of nurturing the mafia and said that any such mafia would be reduced to dust (mitti mein mila dunga). Yogi was speaking in reference to the murder of Umesh Pal. "Is it not true that Atiq Ahmed who was accused by the victim's family is a mafia nurtured by Samajwadi Party? We have only tried to break his back," the CM had said.
Expressing his grief over Umesh Pal's murder he said that he would not allow any mafia to function in the state and warned that the mafia would be reduced to dust. He also said his government has zero tolerance for crime. A video of the CM's statement that went viral earlier, kept trending on social media throughout the day. After the shootout, CM Yogi lauded the Special Task Force which was involved in it. He also chaired a high-level meeting to take stock of the law and order situation.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has accused the BJP-led government of undertaking a fake encounter to kill Atiq's son and sought a thorough inquiry into all the recent encounters. He demanded action against all the culprits involved in the encounters. Also, he criticised Uttar Pradesh police for taking the law into their own hands instead of having faith in the courts. The move was taken by the ruling party in order to divert the attention of the common people from important issues where the state has failed, he added.
