New Delhi: Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday asserted that climate change is an important issue over which action needed to be taken across the world.

Javadekar was chairing the event of 'Key Declaration on Climate Change' which is being signed at the India CEO Forum. Key industry leaders from steel, cement, power, and pharmaceutical sectors were present during the event to reinforce their commitment to the cause of 'village change' and also share their vision for the post-2020 period.

Addressing the event, the Union Minister said, "Climate Change is an imperative issue to be discussed worldwide and collective actions are needed. We are committed to restrict temperature rise below two degrees by the year 2100 and to cut emission intensity by 35 per cent."

"We have to limit pollution. Our tree cover has increased in the last six years by 15,000 sq. kms and emission intensity has been reduced by 21 per cent," he added.

India is a signatory to the Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. As a part of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), India has three quantitative climate change goals -- reduction in the emissions intensity of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 33 to 35 per cent, achieving about 40 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources and creating an additional carbon sink to 2.5 to 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent to additional forest and tree cover by 2030.

Mentioning about India's achievements, Jabadekar said, "The good news is that power consumption has increased by 12% in October, GST collection is higher than the same month last year and auto sales have also increased. All these are indicators that demand is picking up."

In the key declaration, the private sector has been asked to set an achievable Green House Gas emissions reduction as well as energy efficiency improvement goals by promoting renewable energy, enhancing material efficiency, motor efficient processes, sustainable and green mobility, and waste management.

Javadekar also appreciated India's efforts in tackling COVID-19, saying that the country will show the way to the world in dealing with the pandemic.
