Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee skipped the Visva-Bharti centenary celebrations which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing. Her party Trinamool Congress claimed that she received the invite late.

TMC supremo also claimed that she was never invited for the occasion.

"I was not invited for the programme," she clearly told reporters here on Thursday.

On the other hand, Visva-Bharati University authorities have rejected the claim and said that the invitation to the chief minister's office was sent at least 20 days back.

BJP was quick enough to slam Banerjee and alleged that Mamata Banerjee insulted Rabindranath Tagore by not coming to the event.

Taking it to Twitter, Malviya said, "Visva Bharati had sent invite to WB CM on 4Dec2020. But for Pishi, politics is more important than the legacy of Gurudev Tagore! Never ever has a CM insulted Tagore’s Visva Bharati like this! Pishi is impersonation of narrow mindedness that is pushing Bengal to utter darkness!"

Asked about the letter attached to the Malviya's Twitter message, Basu said it is 'fake'.

Basu posed a counter- question and asked whether there is a proof about the acknowledgement of the receipt of the letter.

"Is there any documentary evidence on this count? Did the Vice-Chancellor retain the invitation letter signed by him?" he questioned.

"The Chief Minister cannot be invited in such a manner, "TMC leader replied when reminded that Mamata Banerjee was called on Wednesday evening to re-confirm the invitation.

"Visva Bharati University turns 100. This temple of learning was Rabindranath Tagore’s greatest experiment on creating the ideal human being. We must preserve the vision and philosophy of this great visionary," CM had tweeted.

BJP national president JP Nadda said that it is Banerjee's jealousy and political rivalry that made her skip the celebrations.

"Mamata Banerjee boycotted the centenary celebrations of Visva-Bharati due to jealousy, political jealousy and rivalry, tarnishing the culture of West Bengal and the pride of Gurudev Tagore. She repeatedly calls for the federal structure, but at every opportunity, taunts constitutional values," he tweeted.
