New Delhi: A 18-year-old man who has been suffering from severe heart disease and about to die within months, got a new hope to cherish his dream after getting his heart transplanted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Aman, a resident of New Delhi, was born with a rare heart disease called 'blue baby syndrome'. According to a Delhi based cardiologist, the Blue baby syndrome can refer to several conditions that affect oxygen transportation in the blood, resulting in the blueness of the skin in babies. Doctor claims that he would breathe maximum for the next four-five months. "In the last six months, his condition deteriorated. He had become very sick and bed-ridden and urgently needed a heart transplant," Dr Milind Hote, a professor in the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, said.
Girl from Gujarat gives her heart to Aman
Though, the above line resembles some romantic dialogue derived from a Bollywood movie. But, in this case, it perfectly suits Aman. The doctor who has transplanted Aman's heart said that he knew a 17-year-old brain-dead girl in Vadodara and her heart was later flown to the national capital for transplantation.
Aman had changed his heart valve two years ago
A heart valve is a one-way valve that normally allows blood to flow in only one direction through the heart. The four valves are commonly represented in a mammalian heart that determines the pathway of blood flow through the heart. A heart valve opens or closes incumbent on differential blood pressure on each side. Although the doctors had changed his valve in 2018, it failed to work.
Transplantation was the only way to save Aman
The doctor who has operated the surgery said that he has the only option left to be alive is to get heart transplanted. After resetting the heart, his life would be extended up to 15-20 years. This was the third heart transplant at the AIIMS here this year. The other two were conducted in mid-February and early March, before the COVID-19 lockdown was imposed.
