1. India adds 42,766 new COVID cases, 1,206 fatalities in 24 hrs

India reported 42,766 new cases in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Saturday. The overall tally of COVID-19 cases in the country now stands at 3,07,95,716. The COVID-19 death toll rose to 4,07,145 with 1,206 fresh fatalities. The country's active cases have further declined to 4,55,033.

2. Bengaluru CCB raids Parapanna Agrahara Jail and 8 other locations

The Bengaluru Central Crime Branch (CCB) conducted raids at the Parapanna Agrahara Jail and in eight other locations, according to sources. CCB sleuths having stormed the said locations at 5 am along with a dog squad, seized mobile phones, ganja, knives, cigarette, memory cards and sim cards, said Sandeep Patil, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), adding that the raids were held to monitor rowdy activities.

3. Death toll in Florida building collapse reaches 78

The confirmed death toll in the partial collapse of a 12-storey residential building in Surfside, Florida, has increased to 78 after the remains of 14 more victims were found in the rubble, authorities said. There are 62 people who remain unaccounted for, and 200 accounted for, Xinhua news agency quoted Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava as saying to reporters on Friday. Cava said among the dead, 47 have been identified. The collapse occurred on June 24.

4. BJP's Pragya Thakur who told court she's unwell, seen dancing in viral video

Bhopal BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur has hit the headlines this time not for a slam dunk on a basketball court, instead for dancing at a wedding event, the video of which has now gone viral. As per reports, the video of the MP dancing was shot in her bungalow, when she had organised the marriage ceremony of both the daughters of Narmada Prasad, a poor resident of Rampura.

1. RTI activists on Supreme Court asking lawyers not to cite RTI documents

Supreme Court having asked lawyers to refrain from relying on Right to Information replies as they are not very reliable while arguing cases, has drawn distinct reactions from RTI activists. A Bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna had on Friday made the observation while hearing a case against the Allahabad High Court order pertaining to the dismantling of a building.

2. Sushil Modi's close proximity to Nitish leaves him out of Union Cabinet

Bihar's former Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who was the face of the BJP in Bihar politics for a long time, was once again sidelined by the party as he was denied a berth in the recent Union Cabinet in the reshuffle by the Modi government.  

3. Biden nominates Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as his envoy to India

President Joe Biden on Friday (local time) announced his intent to nominate Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to become the new US Ambassador to India.  

4. Indian Navy prohibits flying of drones over its assets

Indian Navy on Friday prohibited flying of non-conventional aerial objects like drones and UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) within 3 km of Naval Base, Naval Units and Naval assets. "Any non-conventional aerial object, including RPAs (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems), found violating this prohibition, will be destroyed or confiscated without any liability, Additional actions may be initiated under sections 121, 121A, 287, 336, 337 and 338 of Indian Penal Code against the operator", a Defence statement said here.

5. West Bengal: BJP to stage statewide protests against 'irregularities' in vaccination drive

In order to make the most out of the allegations pertaining to the Kasba vaccination camp, the BJP has decided to hold protests across West Bengal for three consecutive days next week. The party has carefully planned the three-day demonstrations after the protests it held on July 5 turned out to be a damper.
