Farm Law Repeal: Farmers' Satyagraha has broken arrogance, says Rahul Gandhi

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to repeal three controversial farm laws Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said farmers' Satyagraha has broken the arrogance (of the government.) He also termed it as 'victory against injustice.'

New Delhi: Shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the withdrawal of three contentious farm laws on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lauded the farmers and tweeted Satyagraha of farmers, annadata of the country, has broken the arrogance (of the government). The Congress leader's tweeted in Hindi also said, "Congratulations on this victory against injustice."

The announcement of the repeal of the three farm laws comes ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur scheduled to be held early next year.

Among these states, farmers from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were protesting across Delhi's borders for the past year. Farmers from Punjab, Haryana and UP had arrived at the Delhi border on November 26, 2020, and since then they had been demanding the repeal of three farm laws.

The three farm laws are - The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act provides for setting up a mechanism allowing the farmers to sell their farm produces outside the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs). Any licence-holder trader can buy the produce from the farmers at mutually agreed prices. This trade of farm produces will be free of mandi tax imposed by the state governments.

The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act allows farmers to do contract farming and market their produces freely. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act is an amendment to the existing Essential Commodities Act.
