Telangana implements 10% EWS quota for poor in upper castes

The Telangana government has implemented 10% reservation for the Economically Weaker Section thereby benefiting poor sections among upper castes with an annual income of less than eight lakhs.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has implemented 10% reservation for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) thereby benefiting poor sections among upper castes with an annual income of less than eight lakhs. The state government has also announced guidelines for the implementation of reservations for the economically backward classes in this regard, adding that the EWS quota will be based on the income certificate issued by the tehsildar (MRO). It also warned that legal action, including dismissal, would be taken immediately if false documents were found.

With an allowance to increase the number of seats related to the implementation of reservations in higher education institutions, women will also have a 33 per cent quota of the reservations in EWS. The General Administration Department has issued orders with guidelines in line with the decision taken at a recent cabinet meeting.

The Telangana Cabinet on August 1 had set Rs 8 lakh annual family income as a ceiling for candidates to be eligible for reservation under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. The state cabinet under Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had also extended the age limit by five years for state government jobs under the EWS category.

Earlier, the state government on February 8 had issued orders providing 10 per cent reservation to the economically weaker section in educational institutions and the state government jobs, in line with the Centre's.
