New Delhi: Amid the turmoil in the ruling Punjab Congress, wherein a number of legislators raised a banner of revolt against Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, reportedly, the party president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday spoke to Singh over the phone to extend her support and asked him to work for the upcoming elections making sure party comes to power.

It is being said that Sonia Gandhi in her phone call to Capt, had asked him to contest the polls with full power while asserting that Congress must come to power once again in Punjab.

This comes after a section of Punjab Congress leaders, including four ministers and three MLAs, went to Dehradun to meet Punjab Congress in-charge Harish Rawat to express their resentment over Amarinder Singh's leadership, demanding his removal from the post by alleging that his style of working is harming the party and the state.

However, after the meeting, Rawat made it clear that Congress will contest the 2022 Assembly Elections under the leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh.

He also claimed that there is no threat to the party or the state Government. The four ministers who met Rawat in Dehradun are Tript Brijendra Bajwa, Sukhwinder Randhawa, Sukh Sarkariya and Charanjeet Singh Chani.

They were accompanied by Kulveer Zira, Barinderjeet Pahada and Surinder Dhiman.

Meanwhile, a leader of Punjab Congress bashed the rebel MLAs for launching a revolt against the CM just ahead of the elections.

While speaking to ETV Bharat, he said, "What is the sense of going against your own leader when just a few months are left for elections? How can they raise fingers over the CM when they themselves haven't performed in their respective departments or even constituencies? They just want to hide their own failures by attacking Captain."

When asked about Sidhu's repeated attacks on CM, he said, "He has been given a responsibility in the party. Now, it is up to him to decide what can harm the party and what can favour it. However, I can only say that party high command is watching whatever is being done."
