Mumbai (Maharashtra): A 30-year-old woman, who was allegedly raped and tortured, have succumbed to injuries on Saturday, after fighting for life in a hospital for 33 hours, informed the police.

The incident took place on September 9, in the Khairani road of Sakinaka area of Mumbai, where the victim was found lying unconscious as she sustained serious injuries after a rod was inserted into her private parts. 

Meanwhile, the police have arrested the main accused and a case has been registered under sections 307, 376, 323 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code.

"It's a tragic end... She had suffered very severe internal injuries and has passed away," Shiv Sena MLC Manisha Kayande told media.

She said the victim has two minor daughters and appealed to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to consider compensation for them.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik also condoled the demise of Mumbai's Sakinaka rape case victim and ensured speedy investigation of the matter.

Speaking to media, Malik said that it was sad that the woman was no more. "The accused has been arrested and the government will definitely file a charge-sheet within the time frame," he stated.

Speaking on the matter, Bhumata Brigade- a Pune-based social activist organization's president said, "What exactly is going on in the state? Why the law and order are not in place. The accused should be hanged within six months and the victim should be given justice." 

"Fast track court should be set up for this case and there should be a punishment that warns people against committing such a heinous crime and also conveys the state government's stand on it," Malik added.

The police said they received a call in the main control room at 3.30 am on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday that a woman covered in blood was lying unconscious on Khairani Road in Sakinaka.

Sakinaka police reached the spot and the victim was admitted to Rajawadi Hospital in Mumbai where she had undergone treatment and died.
