Rare case of white fungus reported in Delhi

White fungus was found to have infected the small intestine, large intestine and esophagus of a 48-year-old woman, in a rare case reported in Gangaram Hospital in Delhi.

New Delhi: A rare case of white fungus was reported in Gangaram Hospital in Delhi, in which white fungus infection was found in the small intestine, large intestine and esophagus.

Dr Anil Arora, chairman of Institute of Liver Gastroenterology and Pancreatico Biliary Sciences , said black fungus infection following use of steroids was reported and it is for the first time that white fungus infecting esophagus, small intestine and large intestine post Covid has surfaced. There is no medical literature available citing the case. He also said the woman has low immunity as she underwent chemotherapy four weeks ago due to breast cancer which could have led to adverse effects.

The 49-year-old woman was brought to the hospital in critical condition as she experienced vomiting and constipation on May 13. CT scan revealed a hole has developed in her small intestine.

Dr Arora said the patient's condition was very fragile when she was brought to the hospital. She experienced difficulty in breathing also. The fluid inside her stomach was taken out. Later, a team headed by Dr Sameeran Nandi, performed the surgery.

The woman is currently hospitalized and would be discharged after a few days.
