Numbers of Congress's 2007-08 Budget are suspect: FM responding to Chidambaram's allegations

Responding to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's allegation that "major numbers are suspect in the Budget", Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted three instances in 2007-08 Budget, saying those numbers were suspect. 

She attacked the UPA government for what she claimed was lack of transparency. 

"To conclude, I don't want competence to fudge. Narendra Modi doesn't believe in fudging," she said.

'Highest ever utilization of NREGA funds'

'Sitharaman said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is responsible for removing all ills from MNERGA and it was under the BJP that the scheme was effectively utilised.

“We have overseen the highest ever utilisation at Rs 90.469 crore of the rural employment scheme, Sitharaman added.

"It is worth mentioning that 800 million people were provided free foodgrains, free cooking gas provided for 80 million people and cash directly was given to 400 million people, farmers, women, divyang and also the poor and needy," Nirmala Sitharaman said in the House.

Sitharaman said that the Union Budget 2021 has been carefully thought after listening to views, suggestions and opinions from experts and economists around the country and the world.

Sithraman said, Building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat actually represents the aspirations of 130 crore people of this country."

“Over two-thirds of this population are youths looking for opportunities," Sitharaman highlighted. "The Budget was aimed at not only giving relief packages but creating opportunities for employment," she added.

She said that post-pandemic, economies have suffered all over the world and the Union Budget 2021 was an attempt to provide a “strong stimulus” to deal with this situation.

In doing so, she said, not only quick short term solutions were created, "We also looked at medium, long term and sustainable growth that will help us remain one of the fastest-growing economies."

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman listed out the policies of the government that are aimed at rural development, with a special thrust on small farmers. She further accused the Opposition of "unthinkingly throwing allegations at the government" and creating a false narrative around the Budget.

Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance said that the stimulus is for revival and systemic reform of the economy. The commitment of Government is for growth and development.  

Government has discussed with experts, economists across the world and placed all thoughts together.

'Not a Budget for the rich'

Ashwini Vaishnav, MP from Odisha (BJP) said that the Budget caters to the need of poor sections of the society. Ayushman Bharat Yojana, Swachh Bharat, Ujwala, One Nation One Ration Card schemes were for the welfare of the poor. It is not a Budget for the rich, he added.

Responding to P Chidambaram's statement that there is nothing for economic stimulus in the Budget, he said that the Budget has struck a right balance between consumption and investment by envisioning long term goals as well as addressing necessities.

Sanjay Singh, MP from Delhi (AAP) said that the Centre is intended to do what Lord Dalhousie could not do

They would sell the country. The people who bowed down before Britishers are mocking struggling farmers and calling them Andolan Jeevi. They are mocking B R Ambedkar and other independence leaders.

Further, Singh asked why Ministers are getting affected when he mentioned about those who complied to Britishers.

M V Shreyams Kumar, MP from Kerala (LJD) said that the Budget provides hardly anything to spend in hand. He also said that spending on MGNREGA has reduced by 34%. Selling of PSUs, LIC is a spate on society. He also added that the Government eyes on poll bound states with Budget allocation. But the allocations for Kerala do not address real issues. AIIMS, Sabari rail project and others were not allocated funds, he added.

Rajya Sabha Budget Session Updates

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha would witness reply by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Union Budget. Discussion and reply on Budget would be completed by today, ending the first part of the Budget Session. House would not convene on Saturday.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said India and China have agreed to disengage troops after several rounds of the military and diplomatic round of talks after being engaged in long border stand-off along the eastern Line of Actual Control (LAC). Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology said that Twitter's stance on chaos in Capitol in US and chaos on R-Day in Red Fort is contradictory.

Major Ports Authorities Bill, 2020 was passed in the House on February 10. 84 Members voted in favour of the Bill while 44 Members voted against the Bill. National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was also passed on February 9.Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) was passed on February 8.
