Rahul misleading fishermen for votes: Giriraj

After Congress leader Rahul Gandhi once again batted for a separate ministry for fisheries at the Centre, Union Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Giriraj Singh said the Congress leader was merely misleading fishermen before the elections in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi: Union Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Giriraj Singh on Wednesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of trying to mislead fishermen ahead of elections in Puducherry and Kerala.

"Rahul Gandhi is trying to mislead fishermen in Puducherry and Kerala to seek their votes, but will not be successful," Singh said.

"What Rahul Gandhi talked about in Puducherry, he is saying the same thing now in Kerala. He should know that there is a separate fisheries department in the country, for which the Centre has provided an investment of Rs 20,050 crore," he added.

Earlier in the day, during his interaction with fishermen in Kerala, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he would strive to have a separate ministry for fisheries at the Centre.

"So that the issues of fishing community can be defended and protected," he said adding that the UDF leaders in the state would soon hold discussions with the fisherfolk to prepare a separate manifesto for them during the impending assembly polls.
