Rudraprayag (Uttarkhand): A proposal has been prepared for reconstruction of the eight-km-long walkway between Kedarnath and Rambara that was destroyed during the 2013 cloudburst disaster.

The proposal has been sent to the Union Environment Ministry and work will start as soon as it is approved. After the construction of the road, the option of implementing a one-way system from Rambara to Kedarnath will also open for the Dham. This walkway will be about one km longer than the older one.

District Magistrate Manuj Goyal said that a 3.5-km-long road has been constructed from Kedarnath to Garudchatti and now the proposal for construction of a 5.3-km-long road from Rambara to Garudchatti has been sent to the Union Environment Ministry. Now this route will be about nine km long, whereas in the past its length was only eight km.

The District Magistrate said that landslide zones are active on this hill up to 1.5 km above the Mandakini river. In view of this, the executive body has prepared a proposal to make the walkway over the landslide zone. The construction of the old walkway between Rambara and Kedarnath will bring great relief to the commuters.

Due to the simultaneous passage of mules and pedestrians, the route becomes quite crowded. Accidents also happen due to collision between mules. Also, pedestrians have to face a lot of problems as there is a lot of dirt and mud due to the passage of mules. As such, the new route will make the journey more accessible.

In the Kedarnath disaster of June 16-17, 2013, the walkway from Rambara to Kedarnath was inundated by the Mandakini river and landslide zones developed on the hill through which this route passed. In such a situation, the administration constructed a new nine-kilometre walkway from Rambada to Kedarnath on the right side hill. Right now there is movement through this route, but icebergs remain active on this route.

During the journey, there is a danger of the icebergs breaking and coming on the route. Along with this, the climb on this route is also very steep. This is the reason for which the demand for reconstruction of the road washed away in the disaster has been raised from time to time. Reconstruction of this route is also a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
