Pegasus rocks Rajya Sabha, Congress demands discussion under Rule 267

In an interesting development today, Congress leader Anand Sharma, referring to Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha, said that as long as this rule is in existence, issues related to the national importance and security of the country should be discussed in the Rajya Sabha.

New Delhi: For the second consecutive day, the uproar in the Rajya Sabha over the Israeli spyware Pegasus continued. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed concern about the ongoing uproar in the monsoon session of Parliament. Expressing concern over the attitude of the opposition, the Prime Minister said in the meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party that there should be a meaningful discussion in the House and the opposition parties should participate in these discussions.

Meanwhile, in an interesting development today, Congress leader Anand Sharma, referring to Rule 267 of the Rajya Sabha, said that as long as this rule is in existence, issues related to national importance and security of the country should be discussed in the Rajya Sabha.

On this, Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said that dozens of notices have come to him under Rule 267. In such a situation, Chairman will decide the issues that will be debated in the Rajya Sabha.

Any member of Rajya Sabha with the approval from the Chairman, Rajya Sabha, may introduce a proposal that on a particular day all the businesses listed before the Rajya Sabha and the application of any rule be suspended.

The Rajya Sabha website has also published that Rule 267 shall not be applicable in the case where any specific provision already exists for the suspension of any rule under a particular chapter of the rules.

The functioning of the Parliament was disrupted on Monday due to the uproar by the opposition parties on various issues including the three agricultural laws of the Central Government. Due to this persistent uproar, the Prime Minister could not introduce the members of the newly formed Cabinet in the house. Later, he had to provide the list of ministers on the table of the house.
