New born baby dies as hospital catches fire in Assam

The three days old child breathed her last due to lack of oxygen supply as electricity was snapped in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Assam medical college and hospital in Dibrugarh district.

Dibrugarh: A newborn baby died at the Assam medical college and hospital in Dibrugarh district on November 8 after the hospital authorities snapped the electricity connectivity to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as fire broke out in one of the units of the hospital due to short circuit.

Chaos prevailed in the gynaecology ward at night after a fire broke out due to short circuit, locals said, adding that the hospital authorities had to snap the electricity connection to the wing to stop further spread of the fire.

Even though many people including pregnant women, their attendants and others tried to save the child, the three days old child who was on ventilation support breathed her last due to lack of oxygen owing to snap of electricity.

The deceased baby girl was born on November 5 and was put on ventilation due to some complications. Hospital authorities have, however, refused to make any comment regarding the incident.
