Mangaluru: In a first, transwoman becomes youth Congress general secretary

Sanjana Chalavadi is the first transwoman to be elected as General Secretary of the Youth Congress in Mangaluru. Chalavadi is a beautician and she stated that she would help the community in their struggle for their rights.

Mangaluru: In a first, Sanjana Chalavadi, a transwoman has been elected as the General Secretary of the Youth Congress South Block, in Mangaluru. Chalavadi, a beautician by profession, happens to be the first transwoman from Dakshina Kannada district to make it to this position.

Voting for the post of youth Congress general secretary was held virtually on January 10, 11 and 12. Apart from Sanjana Chalavadi, Shiva has been elected as the President and Sohan and Dixit Pujari have been elected as vice-presidents respectively.

Sanjana Chalavadi told ETV Bharat, "I am delighted to have been elected as the General Secretary of the Youth Congress South Block. The transgender community still faces social stigma in society. We have to face many problems. Still, I have entered politics and I would like to thank Mangaloreans for the honour."

"I will help transgenders who struggle to find equal opportunities and status for themselves. I have completed the Beauty Course and working as a Beautician. I would like to thank everyone who helped me on this occasion," she said.
