The move was initiated by the West Bengal Chief Minister’s nephew and the party’s newly elected national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee during a Trinamool Parliamentary party meeting, held last night. The decision was formally announced today by Derek O’Brian and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, both TMC Rajya Sabha MPs, writes Dipankar Bose, News Co-ordinator, ETV Bharat.

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress is making sure that there is a gradual ascendency of their supremo Mamata Banerjee on the national scenario and by 2024 when the general elections come knocking at the doors; she is firmly placed as a major force to reckon with.

Taking the first step towards the direction, Trinamool members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha today unanimously passed a resolution and named Mamata Banerjee as the chairperson of the party’s parliamentary committee. The decision was formally announced today by Derek O’Brian and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, both TMC Rajya Sabha MPs.

The move to formally name Mamata Banerjee as the party’s parliamentary committee chairperson comes a few days ahead of her scheduled visit to Delhi, where she plans to meet leaders cutting across party lines. She is also scheduled to call on Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

“Mamata Banerjee was a seven-term Member of the Parliament and has been the Chief Minister of West Bengal for three consecutive terms. The party wants to use her rich experience as a member of the legislature in both Parliament as well as the state Assembly while deciding the party’s course of action in both Houses of Parliament. Today, she is not a mere Chief Minister of a federal state, but a beacon of hope for the downtrodden of this country. We have all invited her to accept the post of chairperson of the committee and she will guide us,” Sukhendu Sekhar Roy told ETV Bharat over the phone, adding that chairperson of a political party’s parliamentary committee need not be a member of any House of the Parliament.

Mamata Banerjee has already gone hammer and tongs against the Prime Minister as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and it is expected that during her stay in the national capital, she will be upping her ante against the BJP at the Centre. The issues of Pegasus snooping, which she has termed as “bigger than the Watergate scandal”, spiraling fuel prices and the Centre’s handling of the Covid situation, particularly the second wave; which she feels was a “monumental failure”, could well be the ammunitions in her kitty while she takes on the Modi-Shah duo.

Bolstered by the emphatic third consecutive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata has already called upon all non-BJP political parties to form an alliance or political front with a common minimum programme focussed on good governance and free universal ration as its main plank, against the saffron brigade in the run-up to the 2024 general elections. Mamata Banerjee as the Trinamool Congress parliamentary committee chairperson is now all set to gigantically traverse the corridors of power in Delhi.
