Mangalore (Karnataka): The Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangalore has created a record of sorts by delivering 800 babies during the month of October.
The government-run hospital, which averages 400-450 deliveries a month, created a record of its own in October by a crossing of 800 deliveries. Its Covid Maternity Block was successful in admitting and providing treatment to an average of four to five Covid-19 positive pregnant women, every day.
Pregnant women from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Davangere, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, neighbouring Kasargod and Kannur districts of Kerala had been admitted to the hospital, which has 272 beds. There are 28 additional beds, 12 ventilators and six ICU beds with ventilators.
Shortage of beds in private hospitals, exorbitant bills among others were the reasons behind the people's decision to visit the government hospital, which works in association with Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Hospital. Besides, facilities too, have been upgraded at the hospital in recent years and the hospital now has 32 doctors.
Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Durgaprasad M.R. speaking to ETV Bharat said, "it is for the first time that the hospital has crossed a significant milestone in its service. Our hospital is working in coordination with KMC Hospital. At present, we have 32 gynaecologists working in four units of the hospital. Our hospital is a referral and tertiary centre, for patients from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Hassan, Kodagu as well as Kasaragod and Kannur districts of Kerala. We have all the modern facilities required to handle any complicated situation. We never refer cases to other centres, since we have all the equipment here. People too have trust in the services provided at the hospital,” Dr Durgaprasad said.
