Mysuru: Ex-Women Commission official makes shocking remark on rape victim

Former chairperson of Karnataka Women's Commission, Manjula Manasa asked, "Why did she have to come to such an isolated place at night? She is a management graduate. There has to be some responsibility from her side."

Mysuru: Triggering a row, former chairperson of Karnataka Women's Commission, Manjula Manasa critiqued the victim in Mysuru gang-rape case. Manasa asked "Why did she have to come to such an isolated place at night? She is a management graduate. There has to be some responsibility from her side." She made the remarks while addressing the media.

The National Commission for Women on Thursday took suo moto cognizance of the gang rape and pointed out that no accused has been arrested in the case yet. NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote to the Director-General of Police, Karnataka urging him to take stringent action against the accused. NCW demanded that the victim must be provided with medical and counselling support along with necessary compensation to the survivor as per the rules of the Victim Compensation Scheme enumerated under Section 357A of Criminal Procedure Code, 1972.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order Division) Pratap Reddy arrived at the site of the incident for inspection on Thursday. Sources said that police have decided to collect CCTV footage from wine shops in the vicinity of Chamundi Hills. City Police Commissioner Chandragupta provided information to ADGP Pratap Reddy.

A young woman along with her male friend was allegedly assaulted by a gang of miscreants during their visit to Chamundi hills in Mysuru on Tuesday. The woman was allegedly gang-raped and the duo was hospitalized. Police were informed that the accused were inebriated. Beer bottles were found on the spot and police were to examine CCTV footages of wine shops in the vicinity of Chamundi hills, as per sources. The accused are yet to be arrested.
