Tiruvarur: The residents of Thulasendrapuram in Tiruvarur district, who woke up to the news of Kamala Harris's win in the United States, erupted in joy and celebrated her victory. The elevation of the Democrat Senator saw an early Diwali in the village with firecrackers, colourful rangolis and sweets.
Kamala Harris was elected the first female, the first Black person and the first Indian-American to be elected as the vice president of the United States.
On Sunday morning, streets of Thulasendrapuram Painganadu saw the celebration of an early Diwali with firecrackers and beautiful ‘happy’ rangolis replacing ‘good luck’ kolams. The villagers from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur district were ecstatic to wake up to the news of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris winning.
The villagers in Thulasenthirapuram, which is Harris's maternal grandfather's village, beamed with pride. They rejoiced the victory of "the woman of our house."

Special prayers were performed for her and hoardings, posters of the VP were put all around in the village to commemorate her victory. Local leaders of the area and the Thulasenthirapuram temple authorities performed special prayers and also offered annadhanam. Though Kamala's ancestors left the village many decades ago, family members had kept their connections with the temple at Thulasenthirapuram intact.
Even when Harris was nominated as Democratic nominee, the villagers had extended huge support to her. Ever since the news of her nomination for the post reached her native village, the locals have been holding pujas and religious prayers praying for her victory. Banners and flexes were put up all across the village.
Kamala's grandfather PV Gopalan was born in the village and her family has been offering donations to the temple.
