New Delhi: The body of a newborn baby girl was found floating in a drain in Patparganj on Saturday, police said.

The incident came to light today when a school going girl Anu heard the cries of the baby and immediately took her to the hospital for treatment.

Anu said, "The CCTV footage showed that the girl was thrown into a drain by a woman last week at 10.50 pm. The baby was in the drain for about eleven hours and was shivering with cold. The infant was crying out of hunger and cold."

The newborn baby was initially admitted to a local hospital. After the first phase of treatment, she was referred to Chacha Nehru Hospital.

"The newborn was dumped into the drain on Friday last week at around 10.50 pm. I heard the cry of the baby on Monday morning and took her to Jeevan Anmol Hospital nad after the first phase of treatment, I took her to Chacha Nehru Hospital. I have been taking care of the baby for the past five days. The condition of the baby is stable," Anu said.

She added, "The infant was thrown into the drain after 20 minutes of her birth. The parents of the newborn stay in the next building and they had dumped the baby in the drain out of the house. No action has been taken against the parents of the child. I have registered a complaint."

Reports suggest that someone from the nearby house had dumped the infant into the drain.

Baharhal police has launched an investigation and efforts are on to find the parents of the newborn child.
