India completes 100 days of Covid vaccination

India has completed 100 days of its vaccination drive on April 25, having initiated the inoculation journey on January 16, 2021. India emerged as the fastest country globally to administer 100 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine on April 10, 2021, in a span of 85 days, whereas the US took 89 days and China achieved the milestone in 102 days.

Hyderabad: The Indian Government in a bid to curb the Covid spread had begun vaccinating its citizens from January 16, 2021. On April 25th, India completed 100 days of its vaccination drive.

A total of 144 million doses were supplied by the Centre to all states and union territories till April 18, 2021, and amongst those nearly 127 million were Covishield doses and 17 million were Covaxin.

On 24 April 2021, Maharashtra followed by Rajasthan emerged as those states where the highest vaccinations were carried out. India’s Cumulative Vaccination Coverage has exceeded 13.83 Crores on 24th April 2021.

These figures are based on April 23rd figures:

  • More than 31 Lakh Vaccine Doses were administered on 23rd April 2021
  • 5 States account for nearly 60% of India’s total Active Caseload
  • More than 1.38 Lakh Recoveries in the last 24 hours
  • Additional free-of-cost foodgrains to be distributed to NFSA Beneficiaries under PradhanMantriGaribKalyan Anna Yojana in May and June 2021
  • 5 Kg per person per month to be provided to nearly 80 Crore beneficiaries free of cost

Prices of Covid vaccines revised

Currently, a vaccine developed in India totally and two others made in collaboration with foreign firms have been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

Covishield has been in use since January and has shown a 79 percent efficacy against Covid-19.

One is Covaxin which is only for emergency use and it has shown the efficacy of 78 percent against mild, moderate disease and 100 percent against severe disease from phase 3 trial data analysis.

Sputnik V, on the other hand, has shown 97.6 percent efficacy and was approved by India in the month of April.

Since January, vaccine prices were being revised, and finally, on 2nd March 2021 government set vaccine prices, they also administrated vaccines free of cost in government facilities. In private facilities, the government has set the ceiling price for both vaccines Covaxin and Covishield at Rs 250.

On 22nd April 2021 Ella, CMD of the Hyderabad-based company said, “Sputnik V is currently being sold globally at prices of $10 per dose or higher. As far as India is concerned, we are in discussions on the price of the imported vaccine. We will share an update once there are further developments in this regard.”
