Shopian (Jammu and Kashmir): Seven militants and five soldiers were killed in Jammu and Kashmir during the past 30 hours, according to official sources. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir police have claimed to have killed two militants during a gunfight at south Kashmir's Shopian district on Tuesday. "The operation is still underway. Identification of slain militants will be ascertained once the gunfight ends," a senior police officer said.

On Monday, two militants, one from Anantnag while other from Bandipora, were killed in separate gunfights. Besides, five soldiers including a JCO were killed in the line of duty at Surankot forests in Poonch district. Three militants were killed in the wee hours of Tuesday during a gunfight at Shopian's Turan Imamsahib area.

Meanwhile, Srinagar-based Indian army’s 15 Corps General officer Commanding (GoC) Lieutenant General DP Pandey on Tuesday claimed that anti-militancy operations launched by the army in the Valley are based on human intelligence. "I would not like to connect any anti-militancy operation with the incidents that took place in Srinagar and other places," he said while speaking on the sidelines of a function at SKICC. He asserted that all the anti-militancy operations launched in the past few days were based on human intelligence.

"The civilian killings are highly condemnable. Security forces and the people need to be very careful to keep the communal harmony intact." He further stated, "Army is alert and ready to foil any attempt of infiltration on the LoC. The militants operating in the hinterland will be killed with the help of people. The situation is being dealt with by the army and there was no need for additional forces anywhere." He also paid tributes to the five slain soldiers killed in an anti-militancy operation at Dera Ki Gali on the Poonch-Rajouri border.
