Mandi: As a relief to diabetic patients, researchers of IIT Mandi found out that insulin overload in the body causes insulin resistance associated with diabetes. After profound research, scientists found that a drug for treating opium addiction can reverse Type-2 diabetes.

Researchers claimed that naltrexone can cure salt type 2 diabetes. They identified the key protein molecule in hyperinsulinemia, which causes diabetes in the human body. They claimed that this protein molecule can be activated by using a drug made of the Naltrexone salt, anti-opioid addiction drug.

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas, which is used by the cells to receive glucose from the blood, but due to many reasons, the cells lose their ability to resist insulin and it leads to type 2 diabetes, stated the researchers.

Insulin resistance is related to a problem called hyperinsulinemia, in which excess insulin remains in the bloodstream, causing inflammation. Researchers observed that SIRT, protein molecule, can be activated by giving naltrexone in low doses, which will reduce inflammation and increase insulin sensitivity of cells.

Naltrexone is already a FDA-approved drug. The research work was published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The research paper was authored by Dr Prosanjeet Mondal who is also the Associate Professor of School of Basic Sciences along with Abhinav Chaubey, Khyati Girdhar, Dr Devvrat Ghosh, Aditya K Kar, Shaivya Kushwaha and Dr Manoj Kumar Yadav.
