Hisar experiences coldest night in 47 years

The ongoing cold weather conditions continued to sweep Punjab and Haryana on Saturday, with Hisar in Haryana recording a low of 2 degrees Celsius.

Chandigarh: Haryana's Hisar town recorded a sub-zero temperature on Thursday that broke the record for the coldest December night in 47 years, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Hisar recorded a bone-chilling minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, eight degrees below normal.

The IMD said it was the coldest night of the month in Hisar since 1973 when the mercury plummeted to minus 1.5 degrees.

Hisar was the coldest place in the region as cold wave conditions prevailed across the plains of Punjab and Haryana in the past 24 hours.

Haryana's Narnaul saw a minimum of minus 0.5 degrees Celsius, while it was zero degrees in Punjab's Bathinda.

An official of Haryana Agriculture University said that the western disturbances along with southern winds in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana has led to a dip in temperature.

"Heavy rain/snow likely over Jammu Division & Kashmir Valley on 04th & 05th and over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on 05th January 2021. Isolated heavy rainfall also likely over Punjab on 03rd & 04th January and over Haryana & Chandigarh on 04th January 2021," IMD said in a tweet.

Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees, while it was 1.6 degrees in the holy city of Amritsar and 4.1 degrees in Ludhiana.

Chandigarh and Amritsar were colder in the day than Shimla. Likewise, many places in the plains of north India were colder than hilly tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, the Met office said.

Ambala, Karnal and Narnaul recorded their respective minimum temperatures at 5.7, 5.8 and 8 degrees Celsius respectively, while the minimum temperatures of Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa were 7.8, 4.7 and 7.7 degrees Celsius respectively.

IMD has also predicted light to moderate rainfall for several parts of Haryana.
