New Delhi: The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and others in connection with the violence in the national capital during the tractor rally on Republic Day, officials said on Wednesday.

Police detained 200 people and have registered 22 FIRs so far in connection with the violence that left over 300 policemen injured, officials said on Wednesday.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Sudesh Verma, national spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party, condemned the incident and asked that how can farmer leaders avoid accountability for the kind of chaos that took place on Republic Day?

He also alleged that they were not farmers as one of them was in the Advisory Council of Sonia Gandhi. Those who were involved in tractor rally actually seeking their political ground, he said.

"When such anarchy is spread in society, its impact is negative. The government has repeatedly appealed to farmer leaders to come and talk and find a solution because this government is for the farmers. In spite of this, protesters took the law into their hands and clashed with the Delhi police which is highly condemnable," he added.

The tractor parade on Tuesday that was to highlight the demands of the farmer unions to repeal the three new agriculture laws descended into anarchy as tens of thousands of protesters broke through barriers, fought with police, overturned vehicles and hoisted a religious flag from the ramparts of the iconic Red Fort.
