New Delhi: Delhi BJP workers staged a “chakka jam" protest against the Delhi government’s new excise policy on Monday and blocked roads at 14 different locations in the national capital, including NH24 leading from Akshardham to Sarai Kale Khan. The protest near the Akshardham temple was led by Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta.

“The Delhi government is opening liquor shops illegally across the city under its new excise policy. Shops are being opened near residential and religious places. Our protest will continue until the new liquor policy is rolled back," Gupta said while interacting with ETV Bharat reporters.

While during the protest commuters faced heavy traffic jams and long trails of vehicles can be seen near the Akshardham temple causing massive inconvenience. The protests were staged at ITO, Chandini Chowk, Akshardham cross mall road, Keshavpuram, Vikas Marg, Civil Lines, Shahadra, Signature Bridge, Karol Bagh, South and South West Delhi, among other locations.

In a precautionary measure, as the protest might get violent, Delhi police detained Adesh Gupta and BJP's media coordinator Naveen Jindal and took them to Pandav Nagar police station. Later both of them got released after being kept in custody for about an hour.

While taking a dig at BJP, Delhi's Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said "Everybody knows BJP has links with Liquor Mafia and they use to sell liquor through illegal shops. Now with Arvind Kejriwal's new liquor policy, we have stopped the theft of 3500 crores, so now it's obvious that BJP and Liquor Mafia sharing the amount will get upset.
