Hisar: The Haryana Police arrested cricketer Yuvraj Singh on Sunday evening in a case against him for making derogatory remarks against Scheduled Castes. He was later released on interim bail as per the direction of Haryana and Punjab High Court.

Earlier, the court had granted anticipatory bail to the cricketer in the case, but also permitted the police to formally register his arrest. On Sunday, his arrest was registered after an interrogation. The police released Yuvraj on bail in view of his anticipatory bail.

Yuvraj allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Dalit community during a video interview with his former India and IPL teammate Rohit Sharma in April, 2020.

It was during one of the Instagram live sessions with Sharma that Singh made an offensive comment about cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, while talking about his regular social media posts.

An FIR was registered against the cricketer at the Hansi police station by lawyer Rajat Kalsan under provisions of the IPC and SC/ST Act in 2020.

Kalsan had alleged that Singh's comment had hurt the sentiments of the Dalit community, stating that a large number of people had watched the video on social media.

Singh was booked for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc under the SC/ST act. However, he had apologised for the remarks, saying he 'unintentionally' hurt public sentiments.

The cricketer had also approached the High Court to quash the FIR filed against him.
