COVID-19 news from across the nation

So far, India has recorded 97,67,371 confirmed COVID- 19 cases, including 1,41,772 deaths. A total of 92,53,306 patients have recovered, as per the latest data from the Union Health Ministry. However, there are 3,72,293 active cases in the country, which comprise 3.81 per cent of the total caseload. Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have reported the highest number of cases so far.

Hyderabad: A vaccine being developed by the Pune-based Gennova has become India's first homemade mRNA candidate to get permission for human clinical trial, the government said today. The mRNA vaccines do not use the conventional model to produce immune response.

With 29,398 new cases on Friday, India’s total Covid-19 active caseload dropped to 3.63 lakh, the lowest in 146 days. The difference in the new recoveries outnumbering new cases has also improved the national recovery rate to 94.84 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said.

Delhi

New Delhi: Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain on Friday said that the third wave of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) was waning in the state, with the positivity rate remaining below 5% for ten days in a row.

“The third wave of Covid-19 in Delhi is going down. We can now say that the peak was on November 7 when a positivity rate of 15.26% was recorded. Now, the positivity rate has remained below 5% for ten days,” said Jain in a press briefing.

He said, with over 70,000 tests a day, Delhi has been conducting one of the highest tests per million in the country. As of November-end, Delhi reported the highest test per million in the country at over 330,201. The national average stood at 100,159.

Maharashtra

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would be setting up at least 48 distribution centres across Mumbai for administering Covid-19 vaccine to the city’s over 1.24 crore population once it is available.

There will be two to three vaccination centres in each of the 24 administrative wards of the city, according to civic officials involved in process.

BMC additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said, “Once vaccination starts, we will start distribution in every corner of the city simultaneously.”

Karnataka

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government Friday announced that it has set aside Rs 22.5 crore to purchase medicines in the wake of a possible second wave of Covid-19 predicted by the technical advisory committee.

Health and Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said, "We have discussed various points to contain the spread of coronavirus infection for the next 90 days. Rs 11.32 crore has been set aside for purchasing rapid antigen kits and another Rs 22.50 crore is earmarked for medicine purchase."

Punjab

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has ordered the extension of night curfew in the state till January 1, 2020 across the state. The chief minister has also extended curbs on the number of people at gatherings until New Year. Directives have been issued to the Punjab police to ensure strict compliance by people in the state, especially in marriage halls.

Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has tested positive for COVID-19. Taking to Twitter, the chief minister tweeted that he is under home isolation and is experiencing mild symptoms and urged all those who had come in contact with him over the last five days to keep a watch on their health.
