COVID-19 news from across the nation

Lights decked up buildings and earthen lamps dotted houses as India celebrated Diwali on Saturday amid COVID-19 restrictions and a ban on bursting of firecrackers in several states. Prayers were offered and sweets distributed though people mostly took the virtual route to extend wishes. People also visited temples, observing social distancing norms.

While the country celebrated rather muted Diwali due to COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday, the country's total cases hovered at 87,73,479 with new 44,684 infections across the country. The death toll mounted to 1,29,188 with 520 mortalities added on Saturday.

The total number of active cases stood at 4,80,719 after a decrease of 3,828 in the last 24 hours. With 47,992 recovered in 24 hours, the total recoveries in the country touched 81,63,572.

Kerala

Kerala records more recoveries

Continuing the recent trend, Kerala on Saturday again recorded more recoveries than new Covid-19 cases, with as many as 6,793 getting cured against 6,357 new infections out of the 61,553 samples tested in the past 24 hours. A statement issued here by state Health Minister K.K. Shailaja said the number of active cases in Kerala presently stood at 76,927, while 4,41,523 people have been cured so far.

The day also reported 26 Covid deaths, taking the state's death toll to 1,848. As many as 3,19,481 people are under observation across the state at present, including 17,946 in different hospitals

Telangana

Telangana registers 1,050 new Covid cases

Telangana has registered 1,050 new Covid positive cases, increasing the state's tally to 2.56 lakh, even as 1,736 more patients recovered from the virus to outnumber infections on Saturday.

Hyderabad accounted for the highest number of infections in the past 24 hours, 232, followed by Medhcal Malkajgiri (90), Rangareddy (75), Nalgonda (65), Khammam (61), Karimnagar (49) and Bhadradri Kothagudem (47). Among other places, Siddipet (36), Sangareddy (29), Peddapalli (24), Mancherial (23), Jagityal and Mahabubabad (21 each).

Meanwhile, four more people succumbed to the virus, raising the southern state's Covid toll to 1,401. On adding the new deaths, Telangana's Covid fatality rate stands at 0.54 per cent, compared to a national average of 1.5 per cent.

Gujarat

Gujarat Covid cases rise to 45,124

Ahmedabad reported 215 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the highest in Gujarat, raising the district's case count to 45,124, the state health department said. With two deaths, the COVID-19 death toll in the district rose to 1,949, it said.

As many as 195 patients were discharged from various hospitals on Saturday, increasing the total of recovered cases in the district to 39,832.

Maharashtra

Cultural programmes during Diwali take a hit in Maharashtra due to Covid

In Maharashtra, 'Diwali Pahat' cultural programmes, an integral part of the festival, were missing this year due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, some organisations conducted online programmes, like musical events and interviews.
