Number of terror attacks in J&K decreased singnificantly since 2018: Govt in RS

Union Minister Nityanand Rai on Wednesday stated in Rajya Sabha in a written reply that the Government has a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and the security situation has improved significantly in Jammu and Kashmir.

New Delhi: The number of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir has "decreased significantly" since 2018, Minister of State(Home) Nityanand Rai stated in a written reply in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

According to the statistics provided by the Union Minister while the number of terrorist incidents stood at 417 in 2018, it came down to 255 in 2019. It witnessed a further decline in 2020 and the number came down to 244 and in 2021 it stood at 229.

The statistics also showed while 91 security forces personnel were killed in terrorist attacks in 2018, the figure stood at 80 in 2019 and 60 in 2020. As many as 42 security forces personnel lost their lives in terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. As for deaths of civilians in terrorist attacks in 39 persons died in both 2018 and 2019. As many as 37 died in 2020 and 41 died in 2021.

"The Government has a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and the security situation has improved significantly in Jammu and Kashmir. There has been a substantial decline in terrorist attacks from 417 in 2018 to 229 in 2021," stated Rai.

He further stated that the Government has taken various measures to normalise the situation in the Kashmir valley including setting up robust security and intelligence grid, proactive operations against terrorists and intensified night patrolling and checking at Nakas.

"Moreover, the Government has taken several steps for all round development of Jammu and Kashmir including Implementation of PMDP, 2015, Flagship programmes, the establishment of IIT & IIM, two new AlIMS and fast tracking of infrastructure projects in roads, power, etc," he added. Rai stated that a new Central Scheme is being implemented for industrial development of Jammu and Kashmir with an outlay of Rs.28,400 crores.
