Calcutta High Court dismisses contempt petition against ED

Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya dismissed the case saying the ED by stopping Gambhir at the Kolkata Airport. Justice Bhattacharya also said that Gambhir can appeal against the verdict in another court if she wants.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday dismissed the contempt petition against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's sister-in-law Menaka Gambhir.

Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya dismissed the case saying the ED by stopping Gambhir at the Kolkata Airport. Justice Bhattacharya also said that Gambhir can appeal against the verdict in another court if she wants.

Gambhir on September 10 arrived at the Kolkata Airport at night to board a flight to Bangkok. Sources said that her flight was scheduled for departure at 9.4 pm and she reached the airport a bit ahead of schedule.

They further revealed that soon after she reached the Airport, Gambhir received a call from the Immigration Department telling her that she will not be allowed to leave the country. Then ED officials were informed about the matter. They arrived at the airport soon after and spoke to Gambhir, Finally, she returned from the airport.

Earlier on September 5, Gambhir was summoned by ED to Delhi in relation to the coal smuggling case. She approached the Calcutta High Court against the summon. The High Court on August 30 said in an order that Gambhir be interrogated in Kolkata either at her residence or at the ED office in the city.

The court further stated that she can neither be arrested nor any corrective action can be taken against her. It is on the basis of the order, Gambhit filed the contempt petition after she was stopped by the ED at the Kolkata airport.
