Mumbai: Bollywood film producer and builder, Yusuf Lakdawala, died in JJ Hospital in the city on Thursday. The septuagenarian film financier was reportedly suffering from cancer-related ailments.
Earlier this year, Lakdawala was arrested by the Mumbai Police and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a land grabbing case.
Lakdawala was lodged in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail in connection with the case. He was arrested by the Economic offence wing (Ahmedabad Crimes Branch) in 2019 on charges of destroying evidence by altering government documents in a land purchase case.
The Mumbai-based builder was taken into custody while he was trying to flee to London via Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat. The case against Lakdawala was related to a land transaction related to Nawab Himayat Nawaz Jung Bahadur of Hyderabad at Khandala in Pune district.
The land was said to be worth Rs 50 crore. However, Lakdawala was accused of bribing government officials, estate agents and other accused to the tune of Rs 11.5 crore to take possession of the land.
