New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged women to come out of their "comfort zone", saying that there are enough laws to ensure representation of women in governing boards and as independent directors in companies, but women employees are still not in good numbers in the public sector.

Nirmala Sitharaman
The minister made the comment while addressing a gathering after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat unveiled the findings of a survey on Status of Women in India by a Sangh Parivar-backed women’s organisation. One of the findings of the survey is that none of the 24 Parliamentary standing committees has had a woman head.RSS-linked Drishti Stree Adhyayan Prabodhan Kendra (DSAPK), better known as DRISHTI, has conducted a large survey on women across India, interviewing 43,255 women above 18 years of age across 465 districts of India, including 70 in border areas. But the overarching theme of the study seems to be the women who practice spirituality and making a comparison between them and the others.

She said it was her experience as the Commerce and Defence Minister in the previous term of the Modi-led government, and now as the Finance Minister that "women do not come forward to stake claim".

"It is not that there is a dearth of capable women, but they just do not bother to come out," the minister observed.

The minister further noted that laws for more participation of women should not get reduced to “tokenism”. "It's important for women to come out of their comfort zones and take up challenges," she said.

"Women should understand that they have to come out and speak. The minister also hoped the findings of the survey would help the government in policy-making.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhagwat said men should not have the audacity to think it is up to them, or that they have the strength to uplift women, and only women will uplift themselves.
