Varanasi: The agriculture scientists of the district have developed a new variety of Lady Finger. Scientists at the Indian Vegetable Research Institute at Varanasi, have developed this new variety of the vegetable after eight year long research and hard work. The variety has been named as “Kaashi Lalima”. This variety can also be consumed as salad in the diet. In India people don’t eat Ladyfinger as part of their salad. The scientists at the institute say that the new variety of the vegetable would be available in the market after two and a half years from now.

This red coloured Ladyfinger is rich is antioxidants, iron and calcium with many other nutritious elements as well, which would be helpful in fighting a lot of diseases. As per the scientists this variety would be helpful for pregnant women, people suffering from sugar or heart related ailments. The Indian Vegetable Research Institute is working hard to get this variety in the open market. Soon the seeds of this variety would be made available for farmers, and they would be able to grow this red variety with the regular variety at the same cost, thus making more profits.

Technical officer Subhash Chandra tells us that the new variety would be more beneficial as compared to the regular green one. This would be specially beneficial for the women in labour. This variety is rich with iron and a variety of other nutritious elements. Not only people consuming this will be benefited but the farmers growing it would also have an edge. The farmers don’t have to put extra resources to grow this variety. This variety can be grown in the same expense as the regular variety.

New Variety will hit the market in two and a half years

The scientists at the Institute are still conducting more research on this new variety. As a next step the human trials of this new variety will be conducted, which is expected to give further inputs on it. The scientists are also studying any side effects of the new variety on humans. Once all these studies are done the seeds of the same would be given to the farmers for cultivation and post that it would be made available in the open markets.
