Tamil Nadu govt submit status report before SC on COVID-19 spread in Chennai children shelter home

Tamil Nadu government submitted a report to the Supreme Court about the 35 children testing positive for COVID-19 in a government-run shelter home and what steps have been taken to protect other children at the facility.

New Delhi: On the direction of the Supreme Court which had taken suo-motu case regarding the COVID-19 spread in 35 children at shelter home at Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Government on Monday submitted a status report on the about the infection here before the top court.

Senior Advocate M.Yogesh Kanna who appeared for TN Government had filed the status report explaining the background of infection occurred in the Children shelter home.

According to the report, as many abandoned children had come to the shelter from different parts of Chennai and Tamil Nadu, it is hard to identify the source of spread.

“Initially, a few children had a fever at the shelter home. When we subjected them to the test, they turned positive for the COVID-19. Subsequently, we tested all other children in the house and found 19 of them were infected with the coronavirus. It is noted that all 19 children were asymptomatic. We have sanitized the entire shelter,” the TN government’s status report read.

The AIADMK government further submitted that all the children are stable and proper treatment is being given to them.

“Children have been separated according to their infection level and treatment has been given to them,” the TN government added. Hearing on this status report will be held on June 17.

After 35 children in government shelter home had tested positive for the COVID-19 at Royapuram, one of the top hotspots in Chennai city for Coronavirus infection with more than 5000 COVID-19 positive cases, the SC took suo-motu cognisance on this.

A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao asked TN health secretary to file a report on the spread of the pandemic in the shelter homes. It is also noted it sent a questionnaire to all the states regarding the protection of children from the infection during this pandemic. The apex court also urged the Juvenile Justice Committees of all the High Courts to respond on the same matter.
