Demanding that BJP cancel Pragya Singh Thakur's Parliament membership, Congress spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh said that it was up to the saffron party to decide whether it follows the path of Mahatma Gandhi or Nathuram Godse. He added that such a statement was expected from Thakur as Godse is her 'guru', and the duo are the same.

CPI(M) Politburo member and former MP Brinda Karat demanded the immediate removal of Pragya Thakur as an MP.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Karat said, "This is utter hypocrisy and fake nationalism of BJP. She earlier made such remarks. On that occasion, Narendra Modi said that he can't forgive her...the world has seen the subsequent development and she has become an MP."

"First you reward her and then...you (BJP) have given her power but now due to national outrage, you have removed her!" quipped Karat.

"...It seems like a terror accused is praising a terrorist...the politics of BJP has gone down to the lowest level," Karat added.

Congress MP Mohammad Jawed said that with Pragya's comment, it was clear that the ruling BJP considers Nathuram Godse a patriot. 

"Even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned her earlier remarks, she went on to make such comments again," he said, adding that Modi's condemnation seems to have no actual effect.

Strongly condemning BJP MP Pragya Thakur's controversial comment, BSP MP Danish Ali said it was unfortunate that a BJP MP is referring to independent India's "first terrorist" as a "patriot", especially when the nation is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

He added that Thakur was further encouraged as her repeated offences did not invite anything more than a warning from PM Modi.

Strongly condemning BJP MP Pragya Thakur's controversial comment, senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that both the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should publicly apologise.

Dubbing the BJP's decision to axe Pragya from the Parliamentary Defence Committee as mere 'crocodile tears', Alvi said, "If she continues to remain in the party and a Parliament member, it would mean that the BJP wants to walk on Godse's path and not Mahatma Gandhi's."
