AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said that the Citizenship Amendment Law that divides the entire country will not be allowed in Congress ruling states.

"No question of implementing this law in Congress-ruled states," KC said.

This is an unconstitutional law. The states cannot be forced to implement unconstitutional legislation. Student organisations like NSU, Youth Congress are active in the protests.

Venugopal said the Congress expressed solidarity with the students, youths and other sections who are on the streets fighting for their "democratic rights".

He also said the Congress would not support the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in Maharashtra. He was speaking after his arrest in Alappuzha while leading a protest march organised by the District Congress Committee.

Kerala too stops NPR work

The Kerala government on Friday said it has ordered stoppage of all activities in connection with the National Population Register (NPR) in the state considering 'apprehensions' of the public that it would lead to NRC in the wake of the controversial CAA.

While a government order said the NPR had been put on hold in view of apprehensions that it would lead to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), a statement from the Chief Minister's Office said the action was taken as the NPR "deviates from Constitutional values".

It also cited pendency of the matter before the Supreme Court.

Kerala government's announcement comes days after the West Bengal government stayed all activities relating to the preparation and updating of the National Population Register (NPR) in the state, amid furore over the citizenship law.

CM speaks says precautions should be taken against unpleasant incidents

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said after the two-hours long meeting with the police officials that the District Superintendents have to involve with people. And each district has to take precautions against unpleasant incidents.

CM told the media after an important meeting with senior police officers at home office Krishna. At a two-hour-long meeting, the necessary advice from the Home Department was proposed at a meeting of high-ranking police officers. He said that every district should maintain the status quo.

District Superintendents of Police in every district should take measures to mingle with people and prevent any unpleasant incident.

He said, "if the police were able to raise public awareness on the citizenship act as much as possible, it would bring about a better growth of law and order. Tomorrow I and Home Minister Basavaraja Bommai will go to Mangalore and have a meeting there."

He also suggested that Home Minister Amit Shah should follow the directive.

Cong demands judicial probe into Mangaluru firing

Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded a high-level probe by a sitting High Court judge into the police firing in which two persons died during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Mangaluru.

Terming the killing as "inhuman", Siddaramaiah alleged that the Mangaluru incident indicates that police themselves incited violence.

The former Chief Minister also claimed it was a conspiracy to scuttle the freedom of people by creating an atmosphere of fear.

It's very clear that BJP government was trying to reap political benefits by causing communal clashes, he alleged, while pointing out that "scuttling the freedom of people is what Hitler did in Germany and Mussolini in Italy."

"I strongly condemn this killing of two innocents by firing. Government has to take its responsibility. There should be high-level probe by a sitting High Court judge," Siddaramaiah said.

Entry restricted at Mangaluru for visitors from Kerala; Vigil stepped up in northern Kerala

At least 50 people, including women who arrived from Kerala to Mangaluru sans any identity cards, were detained on Friday, police said, as entry to this city was restricted in the wake of the violence during the anti-CAA protests on Thursday.

The Kerala police have meanwhile stepped up vigil in the northern parts of that state, a day after two people were killed in Managluru in police firing during protests against
the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Entry for those from Kerala to Managaluru was restricted at Thalappady border as police checked identity cards before allowing them in emergency cases.

At least 50 men and women who arrived from Kerala to Managaluru by train were taken into custody for trying to enter the city without identity cards.

Some media persons were also detained for entering the Government Wenlock hospital where the post-mortem of those killed in the firing on Thursday was underway this morning.

The media persons' cameras and mobile phones were also seized.

Mangaluru is on high alert after Thursday's violence and the public have been advised not to move out of their houses, sources said.

Hyderabad: A Kerala-based journalist was arrested from Wenlock district hospital in the city on Friday as protests against Citizenship Amendment Act gained momentum across the country.

As many as two protesters were killed during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Jaleel (49) and Nauseen (23), both of whom had suffered bullet injuries when police opened fire to quell protests against recent amendment in Citizenship Act.

So far, Mangalore police has arrested more than 25 people.

Almost all the country's major cities - Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hyderabad - saw protesters on the streets despite substantial police presence and the imposition of prohibitory orders at several places.

Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in the district.

Mangaluru Police Commissioner P S Harsha on Friday said that the situation in Mangaluru is "absolutely peaceful" and "under control".

Harsha's statement comes a day after two people - Jaleel (49) and Nauseen (23)- were killed due to police firing while they were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act on December 19.

"Situation in Mangaluru city is peaceful, no incident has been reported in the night, police have been deployed all across the city. South India resists CAA: Chennai police file cases against 600 protesters

Hyderabad: A Kerala-based journalist was arrested from Wenlock district hospital in the city on Friday as protests against Citizenship Amendment Act gained momentum across the country.

As many as two protesters were killed during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Jaleel (49) and Nauseen (23), both of whom had suffered bullet injuries when police opened fire to quell protests against recent amendment in Citizenship Act.

So far, Mangalore police has arrested more than 25 people.

Almost all the country's major cities - Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hyderabad - saw protesters on the streets despite substantial police presence and the imposition of prohibitory orders at several places.

Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in the district.
