New Delhi: The Supreme court on Tuesday directed all the states and the union territories to provide sex workers with ration without asking for ration card or other identity proof.
The bench led by Justice L Nageswara Rao was hearing a plea filed by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya committee which sought ration for the sex workers hit due to the corona pandemic. In the last hearing the court had sought reply from the central and the state governments considering it to be an urgent matter.
Today the court directed to provide dry ration to all those sex workers identified by National AIDS Control Organisation and district legal authorities.
Further it directed the states to respond in 4 weeks on what all have they done for the sex workers and how many of them were provided with the dry ration. The court asked the centre if it can extend the financial assistance, given to transgenders, to sex workers as well.
