SC asks centre submit details on stranded Tamil labours in Kuwait

The Supreme Court has asked the details of Indian Tamil workers, who are stranded in Kuwait and other foreign countries for the last four months due to pandemic. A bench of SC judges led by Justice Ashok Bhusan had heard the matter today.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday directed the Centre to furnish details about the stranded Indian Tamil workers in Kuwait and other foreign countries.

The apex court has given direction upon hearing a petition by Forum for Tamil Workers in Abroad from Tamil Nadu. A bench of SC judges led by Justice Ashok Bhusan had heard the matter.

The petitioner sought directions to bring back the stranded Indian citizens at Kuwait and other countries by operating more flights under the Vande Bharat Mission.

The bench said that the centre has not submitted an exhaustive list of the Indian citizens being stranded and waiting for the repatriation during the pandemic.

KM Nataraj, Additional Solicitor General of India submitted that the centre would submit all the documents in a week time. The ASG also requested the bench to adjourn the case. Therefore, the bench postponed the week for a week time.

It is noted labours from Tamil Nadu who are stranded at various foreign countries due to the pandemic had alleged that the centre and TN government is not in favour of allowing more flights under Vande Bharat Mission.

Tamil Nadu's opposition party DMK has approached the Madras High Court with regarding this issue.
