New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed a Mumbai based lawyer, Sagheer Ahmed Khan, to bear cost of sending back home migrant workers who hail from his home district Sant Kabir Nagar in Uttar Pradesh but are stuck in Mumbai due to lockdown.
Khan donated Rs 25 lakhs as train fare in court's registry for transportation of migrant workers to Basti and Sant Kabir Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.
He has been directed to deposit the money within a week and the court will hear his plea again on 12 june.
The lawyer had filed a PIL in the top court seeking directions to the government to ensure safe transportation of migrants from Mumbai to Uttar Pradesh.
He had offered in his plea to donate 25 lakhs for the cause and the court allowed him today.
