New Delhi: Accepting pleas of social media giants - Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp - the Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed transfer of various petitions related to guidelines for regulation of the social media in India, from different high courts to the top court.
A bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose said the matter will be heard in January after the Centre formulates new guidelines on intermediaries.

The Supreme Court has allowed transfer of petitions concerning guidelines for regulation of the social media in India, from different high courts to the top court.

A bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose said the matter will be heard in January after the Centre formulates new guidelines on intermediaries.
Intro:The Supreme court bench comrising of Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Aniruddha Bose allowed the transfer of petitions filed by the social media giants, Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to itself from the Madras High court and the other High courts. The apex court asked the parties to submit all the co related case and said that it will place the matter before the Chief Justice Of India Ranjan Gogoi who will decide an appropriate bench to hear the matter.

During the hearing Attorney General KK Venugopal contended that an organisation can not come to the country and deny decryprion. He added that it has several offences. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the government has no intentions of invading privacy but a terrorist can not use the platform and carry on anti national activities. Venugopal aslo said that an IIT professor os ready to decrypt the information.
Justice Deepak Gupta said that in countries like US outside agency comes for decryption and what is stopping the government to form their committee to decrypt.
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohtagi appearing for the social media said that there no rule which mandates them to provide the key and they don't have the key that they will give it.
