Dehradun (Uttarakhand): The high range of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, which is known for its natural beauty, produces a little known medicinal herb that cures multiple diseases, including cancer. Even, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mentioned several times in his speeches about this herb but has not yet reached urban markets.
Badri Berry is also known as sea buckthorn and its botanical name is Hippophae rhamnoides. The oil extracted from this thorny herb is effective in curing several serious ailments including cancer, kidney stone, diabetes, blood pressure and problems of the liver.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Uttarakhand for the investors’ summit of 2018, was presented with 1.5 litres of the juice extracted from this plant. One litre of Badri Berry oil costs Rs 1,000.
According to Dr Vijay Bhatt of Gopeshwar-based medicinal herb research and development institute, Badri Berry, found only in the high mountain ranges of Pithoragadh, Uttar Kashi and Chamoli, is also a very effective fertilizer for barren land.

While the oil extracted from Badri Berry is used quite widely by the local people, it is yet to gain popularity in cities where people suffer from multiple diseases due to high level of air and water pollution. Dr Bhatt stressed the need to create awareness among the city dwellers about this very useful herb.
The leaf of this plant is also used as fertilizer and medicine by the hilly people of Uttarakhand. The plant grows only in the cold climate of the high range Himalayas. Its plantation on a large scale has the potential of generating substantial income for the local villagers. The demand for Badri Berry is increasing gradually in the global market.

The medicinal herb and plant research and development institute in Uttarakhand is planting Badri Berry in fallow land at various places to encourage its commercial farming by villagers to create employment opportunities and economic development in the region.
The extract from Badri Berry is useful in removing toxins from the body and increasing the resistance against many diseases.
